High School Graduation by Maya Angelou

Does the saying "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul." represent more in the story than just a part of a recitation by one of the minor characters?

I think its more than just a part of her speech because if you REALLY think about it, it's her way of saying "she is in control of her actions and she doesn't just let things happen in any way". I think that it is modivational and I would stand behind that idea.

i think that the saying in the story represents the thoughts and feelings of the graduating class. even though the character says "i could have cried at the impetertience". i belive that the main character wanted to belive the saying but was put down by the speech before. when the charcter relizes that she had hear the anthem for the first time she actually belives the saying and understands the words of the anthem. the graduating class had relized that could do what they wanted to do because they were on top.

Yes I feel as if in the story the saying is like the choices that the chaaracter makes to go the extra mile and learn the extra things like the presidents in alphebetical and chronological order show that she cares a whole bunch about her future and she controls her actions to drive herself because she knows that the choices that she makes effect the way she will be as she ages. This shows that she is in control and is "The captin of her soul." She also knows that the choices that she makes will effect her fate. In the story she said " No absences no tardinesses and my academic work" This shows that she cares!

  4. I think that this saying is represented more in the story then just one persons feelings. I say this because they are all one community. This doesn't mean that they all are the same but that they all hold their own opinions. They follw their beleifs. Just like the girl in the story. She makes her own decisions not based on what others say.

  5. It does mean more in the story. The author is saying that this high school/middle school graduation shows that she is in charge and she needs to think about her future and what her future will hold. A line before said they were helping the the "graduates seeking thir place in the world." But she also feels she is so young and she doesn't want to grow up and have to worry about all this stuff. It is showing exactly what she doesn't want to have to think but she knows it is true

I disagree with Jewl Dude Stickley because it is not just part of the speech. It is the added meaning to the story. It relates to the main character and all of the students in her class. I feel as if it is the underliying meaning of the text.

  7. i agree with cheermojo13 Johnson as they said "The captin of her soul. She also knows that the choices that she makes will effect her fate." i agree because if you don't make the right choice she could hate their life in the long hall. i believe that what they stated is a true statement because you should follow your own dreams not what othres may tell you to do. she believed that what she was doing is the right thing. everyone should be careful in their decisions and make sure the path you take is the rigt path.
