I think that this means that winter is completely different from other seasons. In the story, it says that in the winter, there are specific things that only happen in the winter, like when the big black stove is turned on, or Uncle David starts telling stories.
This meaning could be applied to other parts of the story. This could mean that this specific winter stands alone, because Wayne almost made Uncle David stop telling stories.
the saying "winter stands alone" means that this is a time of family. i believer this because throught the story the family is always working together. in the world most people aren't outside all the time. this is when family reunites to talk to everyone. for example every night after dinner and chores they would tell stories. this mening could be applied in other parts of the story. as i said they told stories every night. another way is the girl(narator) and wayne were very close, especially during winter with the stories being told. so the saying "winter stands alone" is a big part of this story.
i think the phrase represents the end where the uncle gets new streanght and actually does split the logs. "and he was young". i thinh winter stands alone represents how nobody brlieved his stories after the dad said it was a lie. but he did it just for hi. when the children saw him split the logs they found out that he really could do it, "he stood alone" but now other people know.
this small phrase is very important to the story. This phrase is showing her feelings for her life and family. Every winter her family sits around a fire each night and this is how she bonds with her family and learns about their childhood. This can be applied to the story of crazy alen because winter is what perserved his body and without it being winter that story would have no meaning. The narrorater feels winter is different and she likes things that are different she feels close to winter
